The Blank Generation: Blank Tapes NYC 1975-1987

Necessity might well be the mother of invention but poverty is the midwife of genius. New York in the 1970s was broke and broken, falling over and burning down, yet gave rise to one of the most creatively fertile periods in popular music. At the centre of much of the music made during this fruitful period was a maverick producer named Robert Blank. His studio, Blank Tapes, was at the centre of the downtown scene throughout much of the 1970s and ’80s, and acted as a busy crossroads for the disco, Latin, jazz and no wave scenes, among others. The Blank Generation this wildly diverse selection together for the first time, including previously unreleased mixes of Mikki's Itching For Love and Sun Ra's Where Pathways Meet. Other tracks include Bob's own Aural Exciters project with Emile (Night Rate), Wax The Van, his collaboration with wife Lola Blank and Arthur Russell and James Blood Ulmer's foray into funky harmolodics with Jazz Is The Teacher, Funk Is The Preacher.

If you order from DJhistory.com before the end of February, the album comes with a FREE mix from DJH's own Bill Brewster featuring a mix of Bob Blank gear (tracklist below).

DJ History Podcast #46

Hello campers. Happy New Year.

I had a nice break, though with all the driving over New Year it didn't seem like much of a break at all, frankly. Great set of parties, though: NYE at Basement Boogaloo at the Star in Bethnal Green was really good, Low Life the following night was obviously great and then even Cargo the night after was good, as well, give or take the odd herbert asking for idiotic stuff (Baggy Trousers?!).

Anyhow, first podcast of the year, innit?

We've got a Victor Simonelli special for you, to coincide with the release of the compilation we've just done with Mr Simonelli. There's an interview with Victor, interspersed with tracks he's been inspired by or worked on.

Tracklist here:
Michael Wilson - Groove It To Your Body (Prelude)
Rodney Franklin - Bustin' Out (Criminal)
Soul Boy - Harmonica Track (Minimal)
Groove Committee - I Want You To Know (Nu Groove)
Solution - Feels So Right (E-Legal)
NY's Finest - Do You Feel Me (Bassline)
